The UN and ICJ are up to their usual anti-Israel tricks
Here we go again. The same old meaningless anti-Israel nonsense from the United Nations and the so-called International Court of Justice.
The corrupt and feckless United Nations (UN) is an antisemitic organization devoid of any decent people and any redeeming features. Its latest move to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to rule on the legality of Israel banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is laughable.
As a sovereign state, Israel has a fundamental right to decide which international organizations it engages with and on what terms. The ICJ has as much right to rule on this matter as I do to referee the next world heavyweight boxing title fight.
This request from the UN for such a ruling is utterly despicable. Israel did not ban UNRWA for misappropriating funds, being inefficient, or having bad haircuts; it banned them for being deeply complicit in Hamas and wider Palestinian terror. It is soaked in Jewish blood and must never be forgiven.
If there was a single moral soul at the UN, it would have shut down UNRWA itself.
UNRWA’s headquarters in Gaza was built atop of a Hamas intelligence and communications hub. More than 100 UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 pogrom and an estimated 10 percent of UNRWA staff have known ties to Hamas.
UNRWA is also guilty of radicalizing the Palestinian body politic by running schools in Gaza and Judea and Samaria that teach Palestinian children to hate Jews and to aspire to martyrdom by killing Jews.
Doing that to generations of children requires a special kind of evil.
As bizarre and obscene as it sounds, the UN is trying to secure a legal ruling from the ICJ that says Israel is not allowed to ban a terror organization just because it pretends to be a refugee and aid organization. I was going to use this as a plot for a political thriller novel, but I thought it was too implausible. Such is the UN.
The ICJ, of course, is only a facsimile of a law court. Whenever the shameless ghouls at the UN want a legal basis for their antisemitic shenanigans, they ask the ICJ’s marsupial judges - which the UN itself appoints - for an advisory ruling, and then claim Israel is breaking international law.
This is what happened when the UN asked the court to rule about whether Israel was illegally occupying Judea and Samaria. It was not a real case. It was about the Palestinians trying to weasel out of their Oslo Accord obligations.
In any case, the ICJ can issue only advisory rulings, which means its rulings are non-binding and meaningless. The ICJ’s opinions are a tool for political posturing. Its rulings are less important than my contribution to quantum theory.
The court claims that its advisory opinions carry "great legal weight and moral authority". Ha. Do not make me laugh. If you read that in a new story, then you know that the journalist has cut and pasted this from the court’s poorly written website.
Such pronouncements are required only when they are not true. Bodies with real credibility and authority do not need to tell you about their credibility.
As for symbolic importance, the only thing ICJ rulings are symbolic of is the UN’s dysfunction and anti-Israel bias.
Over the next few weeks, the world’s media will embarrass themselves by writing about this matter as though it were a real court case, so I recommend inoculating yourself against the nonsense now.
The international media will do this because they are complicit in adding a veneer of legitimacy to the international lawfare campaign against Israel, of which this case is a part.
Given that UNRWA is a criminal terrorist organization, the story journalists ought to be writing is how the UN has held no one accountable for UNRWA being involved in terror.
Israeli journalists, for their part, should be writing about how Israel has been derelict in meeting its own security needs by allowing UNWRA to continue as long as it did.
Israel complained for years about UNRWA’s terror links, but the UN did what it does best - nothing. Israel should have shut UNRWA down long ago.
Israel has for too long participated in the delusion that the UN is a credible body. It is not. If an alien spaceship came to Earth and vaporized the UN with a death ray, like a scene from Mars Attacks, the main change would be a net increase in morality and a net decrease in antisemitism.
The ICJ is as disreputable as the UN. Many of the court’s judges come from dictatorships without independent or credible judiciaries and there is no way judges from such countries would rule against their government’s position.
The court will hear submissions on February 28. Israel should not even dignify the proceedings with a response, let alone a submission.
Thanks for the Hanukkah gift. The only thing missing from making this the perfect year end UN Best Hits piece was the final tally of UN condemnations Israel vs the rest of the universe.
Wonderful article, Nachum! I did not know that you were also a boxing referee AND a quantum physicist, too! 😂 Wishing you and your family (and all of Jewish Nation) a Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
