The UN succeeds only at failure and antisemitism
Give credit where its due. It is statistically improbable for an organization to remain as corrupt and morally worthless as the United Nations. Yet, it does.
Whenever I think the gangster organization known as the United Nations (UN) can exasperate me no further, it plumbs new depths of immorality and perfidy.
The latest example has been UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ failure to condemn Iran for its 200-plus ballistic missile attack on Israel - the largest such attack in history.
Guterres’ initial response was to “condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation” without naming and condemning Iran as the perpetrator. This betrayed his obvious prejudices, prompting Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz to declare Guterres persona non grata and bar him from Israel.
Only after this did Guterres condemn Iran, telling the UN Security Council that, "As I did concerning the Iranian attack in April, and as it should have been obvious that I did yesterday in the context of the condemnation I expressed, I strongly condemn Iran's massive missile attack on Israel."
It beggars belief that the world’s leading diplomat does not understand the significance of using the correct language of diplomacy. More probable is that Guterres is an "anti-Israel secretary-general who lends support to terrorists," as Katz put it.
Katz has the evidence on this side when he says that since Hamas’ October 7 pogrom Guterres’ policies have “provided backing to terrorists, rapists and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and now to the mothership of global terror, Iran.”
As always, Katz is being too diplomatic. Guterres is a running dog of Islamists, despots, and terrorists. He is as irredeemable antisemite who has achieved the nigh impossible feat of making the UN - already the world’s most corrupt and ineffective organization - even less reputable.
Guterres stands out for his ethical barrenness and lack of honor in an organization that is a moral desert. With a sociopathic indifference to Israeli suffering, he said the world had “failed the people of Gaza.”
In fact, the UN fails everything it touches. Failure and antisemitism are the only things at which it succeeds.
This is not a controversial assessment. Argentinian President Javier Melei stood up at the UN General Assembly in New York last month and lambasted the body for including "bloody dictatorships" such as Cuba and Venezuela on its Human Rights Council and allowing countries "that punish their women just for showing their skin" to sit on UN women’s rights committees.
In a blistering attack, he noted that “Israel is unjustly targeted while regimes that oppress their people are given a platform” while “this "this same house has voted against the State of Israel, which is the only country in the Middle East to defend liberal democracy."
Every word Melei said was correct. His courage in speaking the truth was commendable. Contrast that with Israel’s allies the US and Germany which said that Israel declaring Guterres persona no grata as “unhelpful”.
Unhelpful to whom? Why should Israel help such a racist, corrupt, and feckless organization? The UN is unhelpful to everything it puts its grubby paws on. Whatever the opposite of the Midas touch is, the UN has it.
Instead of reflecting on whether Israel’s criticisms had any merit, Guterres’ UN comrades got hyper-defensive, rallying around their gormless leader in a stomach-churning display of sycophancy.
As any psychologist will attest, defensiveness is a coping mechanism that leads to decision-making blind spots. I wish the UN was just blind. Unfortunately, it is not. It is institutionally anti-Israel and antisemitic.
Lest anyone thinks I am being churlish, consider the UN’s stupefyingly contemptible record.
The UN twice elected Nazi Kurt Waldheim as its leader between 1972-1981. For those unfamiliar with the UN’s rancid history, that is not a misprint.
This was the period when the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was emerging in response to the Cold War blocs that were dominating the UN. Egypt, under warmongering pan-Arab nationalist President Gamal Abdel Nasser, was a NAM leader and most Arab states were members.
They made the Israel-Palestinian conflict a central global issue and in 1974 invited Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat, a vile terrorist who did not represent any state or nation (there has never been country called Palestine), to address the UN. While the US opposed this, no European state had the courage or decency to do so.
In 1975, the UN voted that Zionism was racist. In other words, it voted that the very idea of Jews living in their ancestral homeland was racist and that Jews were the only people without a right to a homeland, sovereignty, and self-determination.
The UN rescinded this only in 1991 as a condition of Israel entering into the Oslo Accords, in which the Palestinians were offered and rejected a state so they could go on murdering Jews.
During this period, the UN General Assembly passed almost 20 resolutions that were critical of Israel, more than any other nation. They were passed without a hint of irony that while the UN was condemning Israel, all of Eastern Europe was under vicious communist totalitarian rule, as was the entire Arab world (as it is today).
Israel is the only country that the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has a standing agenda item against in each session. Item 7, titled “Human Rights Situation in Palestine and Other Occupied Arab Territories”, is the only item that singles out a specific country, guaranteeing Israel gets condemned in every session.
The UN Watch Database shows that from 2006 through 2022, the UNHRC adopted 99 resolutions against Israel. By way of contrast, there were 41 resolutions against Syria, 13 against Iran, four against Russia, and three against Venezuela, all of which are tyrannical dictatorships.
This anti-Israel bias has continued unabated and showed its full malignancy in the UN’s response to Hamas’ October 7 pogrom, in which more than 1200 Israelis were killed and 251 taken hostage in the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
Guterres said: “It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.” This was a lie. There had been no Israelis in Gaza since 2005. His suggestion that there is some way a pogrom could be justified was obscene.
In a grotesque attempt to keep Hamas in power in Gaza, the UN has passed multiple resolutions that have failed to condemn the Islamist terror group and pressured Israel for a ceasefire that would leave the Jewish state vulnerable to further attacks.
The UN even adopted fake Palestinian casualty data from the Gaza Ministry of Health, ignoring the fact that Hamas runs this ministry and inflated the death toll. The UN used this fake data for seven months before admitting it was fictitious, after which it issued no apology and showed no remorse.
While the UN constantly condemns the world’s only Jewish state, it has been notably less critical of Hezbollah being in violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 1559 and 1701. Resolution 1559 demands the Iran-backed terror group disarm, while Resolution 1701 demands it retreats from the Israel-Lebanon border to behind the Litani River.
UN inaction, which Western and Arab powers have shamefully enabled, bear considerable responsibility for the current war.
This brings us to the United Nation Relief and Works Agency’s (UNRWA), a nefarious and deeply antisemitic organization.
Israel should declare UNRWA a terrorist organization because it is one. A bill before the Knesset for Israel to sever ties with UNRWA and ban all governnment representatives from engaging with it cannot be passed into law quickly enough.
Those countries that fund it are willfully financing terror. UNWRA’s headquarters in Gaza was built atop of and connected to a Hamas intelligence and communications hub. More than 100 UNRWA staff were directly involved in the October 7 pogrom and an estimated 10 percent of its staff have known ties to Hamas with far more sympathizing with it.
This should have been the biggest scandal of the 21s Century. UNWRA should have been immediately disbandment and its leadership arrested but, as is clear to all now, the UN finds killing Jews is acceptable.
UNRWA has kept the Israel-Palestinian conflict boiling by repeatedly changing the eligibility requirements to be a Palestinian refugee to include second and third-generation descendants, bestowing refugee status on Palestinians who are living where they were born, which, by definition, means they cannot be refugees.
Such a record makes it impossible to mount even a semi-credible defense of the UN. My regard for the UN is so low that if I meet anyone who defends it, I walk away because I know I am talking to a fool.
In the Torah, ten generations after the creation of Adam, God saw that the earth was corrupt and filled with violence and decided to destroy His creation. Nothing short of a biblical-scale flood will solve the UN’s depthless deficiencies. We are well past any point of reform. It needs to go the way of the dinosaurs, ideally with a giant meteorite hitting it.
One can argue that the world needs some representative forum where countries can posture. That is a proposition that goes unquestioned too much, but maybe it is true. How an effective version of such a body would look is hard to imagine.
We do know how it should not look, which is like the UN.
I would argue that the world has a number of bodies that make the UN obsolete. ASEAN, G7, COMESA, etc.. Regional bodies may be preferential as they can offer economic and security protection from external bad actors ( ie China in the Pacific). At this stage, UN, as a supporter and haven for dictatorships, does way more harm than good.
